About Micro Finance

Sungi believes that
sustainable development is not possible
until and unless it encompasses all
aspects (economic, social and cultural)
of human life. Based on this principle in
1994 Sungi started a comprehensive rural
development program named "Hazara
Community Support Program" (HCSP) which
also included a saving and micro finance
program under the title of Small
enterprise Development Program. In this
program Microfinance facilities were
introduced. An important component of
this program was saving mobilization; by
2002 this program had helped communities
raise PKR 8.0 Million and had provided
micro loans to thousands of
microentreprenuers.
History marks Sungi as a pioneer in
Microfinance in NWFP and Pakistan Administered
Kashmir. Sungi is also pioneer in not only
introducing the Micro credit and micro
insurance in these areas back in 1994, but has
introduced the complete livelihood solutions to
pull poverty stricken masses out of poverty
trap. Sungi also broke new ground as it was
first to extend micro loans for
productive/business purposes but had also
extended loans for social/consumption loans.
Till date, Sungi has provided financial
assistance to 7591 poor households and has
disbursed more than PKR 87
Million.
Through small loans, savings, insurance,
technical assistance and other financial
services, Sungi has helped the poor reduce
their vulnerability to external shocks,
increase their incomes and build businesses.
This is not an end; Sungi’s contribution
towards its cause of uplifting the
socioeconomic status of poor is also
illustrated by the financial literacy promotion
activities involving training programs for
poorest section of the society. The tangible
benefits of increased income and economic
security for the poor and their households are
real and many including better medical care,
increased educational opportunities and greater
food security.
