Dear Friends & Valued Patrons,

Just two decades ago development was seen to be the responsibility and prerogative of the government and institutions of the state. The last decade of the twentieth century has redefined the context, nature and meaning of the term ‘ Development’. Where not long ago, development was seen primarily to be just industrialization (without any qualification), it now needs to be sustainable, participatory, just, environmentally friendly, equitable, democratic and gender sensitive.

Moreover, the state is now seen as only one of the partners in development, with it’s role greatly reduced to providing an ‘enabling environment’ or level playing field, with the private sector and non-governmental organizations taking over an increasingly prominent role in doing development.

In the wake of the realization of good corporate citizenship we would like to provide you an opportunity to display your corporate social responsibility in the best interest of the community, which is in fact one of the major stakeholders in your concerns as consumers.

Taking liberty of the ongoing debate, we would formally introduce our organization ‘SUNGI Development Foundation’, it’s aims, objectives and programs that would serve to fulfill your aspirations in truly realizing your obligations towards society at large.

SUNGI Development Foundation was established in the year 1989 as a non-profit, non-governmental organization. It was registered under the Societies Act of 1860.

Being one of the largest NGOs, SUNGI works towards bringing about policy & institutional changes by mobilizing deprived & marginalised communities with a view of creating an environment in which communities at the local level may be able to transform their lives through equitable and sustainable use of resources.

SUNGI has evolved a unique approach where by it has combined advocacy work with grass root development to bring about an environmentally sustainable socio- economic development order.

The organization is presently working in four districts of Hazara Division (Haripur, Abbottabad, Battagram & Mansehra) of the Frontier province. The advocacy unit works in all the provinces of Pakistan. The program area encompasses a total of about 267 village committees within 101 villages spread over the four districts.

SUNGI endeavor to build the Human resource capacities of its partner communities has been internationally accredit and the organization stood out as recipient of the UN (HRD) Economic Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (E.S.C.A.P.) Award in 1996.

SUNGI works on a multi-sectoral approach with a number of operational programs to achieve its goals and objectives including Sustainable Livelihood, Social Mobilization & Development and Advocacy as core programs with further sub- categories and support programs.

Some institutional donors such as the Canadian International development Agency (CIDA),Royal Norwegian Embassy (NORAD), The Asia Foundation (TAF), NOVIB (Dutch NGO) & The Netherlands Government (RNE) are presently funding SUNGI. These donors have assisted SUNGI in implementing its programs during the past and have pledged to help in future also.

The current economic situation and the politically instability in Pakistan has made NGOs like SUNGI vulnerable to a lot of external factors including funding by the overseas donors.

In the light of weak policies, inadequate institutions, non-availability of state development funds, SUNGI as an institution and a part of non profit sector in Pakistan seek the assistance of a number of civil society members including professionals, the business community, philanthropists and the industrial sector (including corporate and the multinationals) to join hands with us and strengthen the process of socio - economic development within the country, which would ultimately in the long run contribute for attaining sustainable democracy, for which we all strive for.

SUNGI provides you with a unique opportunity to pursue your social obligations by entrusting your confidence & supporting to our institutional cause to eradicate poverty & social injustice that prevails in our communities at large
