Sungi's Response to IDP's Crisis

Assessment & Coupon Distribution to IDP s

A team from Sungi Development Foundation consisting of four persons started assessment & coupon distribution to IDPs for Provision of Cash for Choice on Saturday May 30, 2009 in Abbottabad. In total 47 families were assessed among which 35 were provided with coupons to receive cash grants of Rs.8,000 for family size 1-5 & Rs.12,000 having family size 6 or more. Three persons among IDP families were selected as volunteers committee members to verify & facilitate teams in future also for assessments & distributions. These persons are literate; speak both Pushto & Urdu; two were part of CBO in their area; affected IDP.

The 35 families include 14 women headed households & 1 disabled person having widow in the family. They were requested to collect the cash grants from:
MCB, Abbottabad.

 During the assessment it was seen that 5 or more families are living in a single rented house and at minimum standards of life. In one house normally 25-35 or even more persons are staying. Their major issues are:

 Difficulty in getting houses for rent; rents raised manyfold; dealers are charging higher commissions; neighbors are not cooperating and questioning why more than one family is staying in one house;

 They do not have mattresses; mats; cooking utensils, if some have they are too few.

 They are in need of water coolers, fans, pillows, blankets, plastic buckets, plastic mats (dari), cooking utensils (dinner sets etc.).

 Female & children need clothes since they currently have one or two suits.
