Disaster Management Programme:

EMERGENCY RESPONSE

=> IDPS Supported in Mardan & Swabi on May 10th 2009

Sungi has provided 229 tents; 200 food packages; and 916 blankets to IDPs in Mardan & Swabi with support of CWS. Currently assessment is being done in camps & host families.

=> Support to IDPs Bahjor with Non-Food Items in January 2009

To save lives and reduce vulnerability of IDPs families through provision of timely assistance of non food items Sungi’s Disaster Management Programme implemented a project. In which 1000 families residing in 19 union councils of Mardan and Lower-Dir were given minimum required non food items.

Key Achievements: Assessment was completed by involving local community based organizations and existing DMC (Disaster Management Committee) members. Then tokens were distributed to 680 families in Mardan and 320 families in Lower-Dir on January 12,13 and 14. The distribution was completed on January 23rd.
The project was implemented by focusing HAP principles. HQMCs (Humanitarian Quality Management Teams) were built to ensure transparency. List of non-food items were:

For women: Shawal, Sweater, Socks.
For children: Caps, Jacket, Sweater, Socks
For men: Sweater, Socks
Kichen Set for whole family

=> Food Assistance to IDPs in Mardan

After the first distribution in Dir Lower; Sungi Development Foundation set its team for the second distribution in Mardan District. 16 union councils of district Mardan were covered in this distribution. Sungi took benefit from its local resources and focused on engaging its local partner organizations in the process of identification of beneficiaries, verification of beneficiaries and food distribution. 705 IDPs families were planned for food assistance in 16 union council of Mardan. These 16 union councils were: UC Babini, Dagai, Par hoti, Mohib Banda, Bijli Ghar, Bagh-e-Irum, Mayar, Roria, Guli Bagh, Ghala Dher, Khazana Dheri, Chamtar, Maho Dheri, Sari Bahlol, Kot Chungra and Kati Garhi. In Mardan district these all union councils were the most occupied UCs by Bajorh IDPs.

=> Earthquake Balochistan Response in October 2008

On 29th October 2008, a strong earthquake struck Balochistan at various parts of the districts Ziarat and Pishin. First earthquake of 5.2 magnitude jolted Balochistan early morning at around 04:33 hrs. Then the second and bigger tremor hit the areas with the magnitude of 6.4 at around 05:10 hrs. Subsequently, aftershocks were felt at 05:54 hrs and 06:32 hrs of the magnitude of 4.0 and 4.6 respectively. After 11 hours, again a strong earthquake of 6.2 magnitude jolted the area at around 17:32 hrs. Around 316 (311 dead bodies in Ziarat and 5 in district Pishin) people, mostly women and children got dead in worst affected areas i.e. Kach, Kawaas (Ziarat) and Khanozai (Pishin). Hundreds of people have been injured and some 15,000 were homeless. In village Malik Alam Khan (UC Kach) 82 people have been killed from one family.

Sungi Development Foundation reached Balochistan on 30th October 2008 early in the morning. Team comprised of 05 members. Team had a meeting at Aurat Foundation Office Quetta. SAP-PK, Balochistan NGO Forum (BNGOF), Aurat Foundation, University of Balochistan, Balochistan Coordination Council (BCC) and Sungi participated. An emergency team was formed and immediately sent to the affected area at noon. Team visited all the villages/ camps, had a meeting with Medical Superintendent DHQ Ziarat. Team provided emergency treatment to the children who had broken legs at village Waam Daboona. Members motivated MS to provide ambulances and community members to accompany small children (orphans) to the hospital.

Mobile Medical Camps: On the basis of rapid assessment Sungi Development Foundation started mobile medical camps in union council Kach of district Ziarat. Support was provided by University of Balochistan and Aurat Foundation Quetta in the shape of transport and volunteers respectively. Team reached far-flung areas where affectees were still waiting for someone to come. Affected community was provided with the medical treatment keeping in view the local customs and norms. Team adopted tent to tent methodology for carpet coverage of these villages. Villages covered during the visit were Tangai, Waam Kotal, Ahmadoon, Waam Daboona etc. Team reached 300 patients in 02 days mobile camp out of which 65% were women.
