Integrity in Public Services
One-day seminar on “marking the international week against corruption”   (Dec 09, 2010) 

Human Rights Programme arranged a one-day seminar on “marking the international week against corruption”. The theme of the seminar was “integrity in Public Services” The seminar was arranged with the coordination of district government Abbottabad. Director National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Farman Khan was invited as chief guest in the seminar. DCO Abbottabad Zaheer -ul-Islam chaired the seminar. 

Manager Human rights Programme Sungi welcome the participants and said that corruption is a complex social, political and economic phenomenon that has weakened the democratic and elected institutions, national economy, and writ of law and god governance.  He quoted Johnston and said that there are four major reason of corruption; 

1.  Weak political competition 
2.  Weak and unjust economic development 
3.  Weak civil society 
4.  Poor institutional policies and procedure to combat against the corruption. 

He emphasized on the head of district institutions to show their resolve eradicating the curse of corruption from their department.  

Director Operations of Sungi said that the definition of corruption extended beyond financial corporation. He also said that not fulfilling one’s duties to the fullest of one’s abilities is big corruption. He also highlighted the zero tolerance policy of Sungi regarding financial corruption.  

After that the District Khateeb Maulana Abdul Wajid addressed the house explained the significant of “Rizk-e-Hilal” and the evil of corruption in the light of Quran and Sunnah. 

The Khateeb of Illyasi Masjid also addressed the house and focused on the religious significance of financial and moral corruption. He requested District Administration to take strong action curb out corruption from the entire government department in District Abbottabad. 

Dr. A.J Khan also spoke on this occasion. He briefed the house that Pakistan was ranked the 10th most corrupt country in the world. He expressed sorrow over the fact that the western Non-Muslims countries were far less corrupt than the Muslim countries which was a matter of shame for all the Muslims. He implored all the members of the audience to focus on improving their conduct and eradicating corruption from their lives. 

On speaking on this occasion the DO Agriculture said that the present social-economic and law & order situation in the country was because the Muslims had become divorced from their culture and tradition. He also narrated various Ahadith showing the importance of financial integrity. Two students also delivered speeches containing anti-corruption messages on this occasion. Syeda Pakeeza students from Government Girls Higher Secondary School Comprehensive Abbottabad, and Ayesha Abid Government Girls Higher Secondary School No 2 Abbottabad took part in debate on anti-corruption. 

The Chief Guest Mr. Farman Khan Director NAB appreciated that endeavor of the District Administration Abbottabad and Sungi to hold this public anti-corruption seminar. He informed the audience that NAB was taking every possible step to find and apprehend all the culprits involved in financial corruption, for personal integrity.  

At the end the DCO, Abbottabad thanked all the participants on attending the seminar. He especially thanked Sungi Development Foundation for their cooperation in the organization of the seminar. He also briefly highlighted the significance of personal integrity and directed all the EDOs and other officials present on the occasion to take effective measures to stop corruption in the government departments.
