Backdrop
A convention of
Human and Democratic Rights activists was
organized in Sungi Head office Abbottabad on
Dec 17, 2009.The theme of the convention was
“Promoting Peace and Fundamental Human Rights”.
The convention was joint activity of Human
Rights and Policy Advocacy
programme.
Objective
The
prime objective of the convention was to
launch Sungi’s first ever six-monthly
human rights monitor and facilitate Human
and Democratic Rights activist get
together and share their charter of
demands (COD) with the Federal Minister of
Human Rights, who was a ‘Chief Guest’ at
this occasion but due to some unavoidable
circumstances federal Secretary Human
Rights presented the ministry. The
conference provided an opportunity to
Sungi and human and democratic rights
activists to develop productive linkages
with Ministry of Human Rights and find out
and explore the venues for future
collaboration in this
regard.
200 men and women human and
democratic rights activists, GLAs, lawyers LG
elected representatives, journalist, members
district steering committees (DSC) and other
notable from district Haripur, Abbottabad,
Mansehra, Battagram and Muzaffarabad
participated in the convention..

Dr. Manzoor Ahmad welcomed
the participants and stated the objectives
of the convention Mukhtar Javed Manager
Human Rights Programme gave a detailed
briefing about Sungi and Human Rights
Monitor. We should be ready to face all
forms of terrorism if the rights of the
people would be further denied He said. He
requested the Ministry to look into the
human rights violations and chalk down a
strategy to curb the causes. He reiterated
Sungi support in the promotion and
protection of human and democratic
rights.

Abbottabad presented Sungi’s Human Rights
Monitor to the federal Secretary and said
that this is high time that state
institutions should play their pro-people
role providing services to common people
so that an environment of peace and
harmony prevail across the country other
wise it would be too late he
said.
Iram
Fatima human rights activist Haripur
presented a charter of demands from the
activists of Sungi’s working area. She
emphasized on the ministry to work
proactively for the promotion and
protection of women rights. She
appreciated Sungi’s work in this regard
and assured her full cooperation
advocating for fundamental rights of the
marginalized segment of the
society.
Fedral
Secretary Human Rights Mohammad Farid Khan
in his address thanked Sungi for their
work educating people about their
fundamental rights. He applauded Sungi
team for their in puts at the policy
level. He assured Sungi that ministry of
human rights will extend full support and
cooperation in the promotion and
protection of human
rights.
