Competition on "Earthquake a Disaster or Challenge"

On 8th April' 2006 at Jalalbaba Auditorium

Sungi Development Foundation sponsored a district level competition among the Girls High schools of district Abbottabad on April 08, 2006 at Jalal Baba Auditorium. The objective behind the competition was "to raise awareness among the girls students and the teachers about the natural disaster". District Nazim Haider Zaman was the chief guest of the competition while Manager Good Governance Programme Mukhtar Javed presided the competition and also played the role of chief judge of the competition.

The student delivered good, healthy and quality speeches about the theme of the competition. Almost all the debater shared their views on two aspects of quake as punishment by God and a challenge. The crux of the debate was that the quake is a natural geo-phenomenon that was a disaster and not a punishment by God. The debater said that huge losses of life and property were only because of ill-planning of our policymakers and corruption of relevant government department. They recommended that the departments who were involved in the poor quality construction of service delivery departments and the schools and houses should be held accountable before the nation.

Mukhtar Javed in his address said that natural disasters can not be stopped but their intensity can be minimized through better planning and preparedness at the level of community, institution and government and that can only be possible when there is good governance at all level.

District Nazim in his address thanked to Sungi for arranging a healthy debate about the quake. He emphasized on all the participants of the event to pass a modest and simple life as ordained by God and his Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) He assured the participants about his commitment to promulgate the practices of good governance at the district level and work for the rehabilitation of the affectees.

The last segment o the event was prize distribution ceremony. Mukhtar Javed and Haider Zaman distributed the prize among the winner and the runner up schools of the district.
