Provision of Humanitarian Assistance to the Flood Effectted Communities
in Sindh- 2011

SECTOR/Project: Food Aid/ Distribution of Food Packages

Main activities/Achievements: To lessen the vulnerability of 257 families of Sanjhoro Union Council of district Sanghar and some families residing at outside the camps established by Government in Hyderabad Sungi provided 257 Food Packages after detailed Household level assessment of affectees. Sungi has supported the Dalat, Kohli, Christian and Muslim communities through food aid in Sanjhoro union council, Wanrhki Wasi (Hyderabad) and Sikandarabad (Near Kotri).  Sungi ensured the implementation of Humanitarian Standards and Principles in launching its response and launched Rights Based Humanitarian Assistance in the mentioned region. The package details were shared with the beneficiaries and they were encouraged to complain or give their feedback regarding quality of work as well as the given package, this developed the sense of ownership and empowerment among the affected people.

Advocacy issues: Some of the main advocacy issues are as follows:

1. DDMA’s Functionality to ensure efficient and effective Humanitarian Response. 2. Political influence/interference in relief distributions. Aid is being used as political stand point which is increasing the vulnerabilities of marginalized flood affected communities. 3. Ensure Quality and Accountability and Transparency in humanitarian assistance to ensure effective Emergency Response in a dignified manner.

Gender Issues: Flood severely affected the women and their access to sufficient food, water and other life facilities. Women are involved in handling and raring of livestock at household level. Moreover before disaster cotton picking, cultivation, etc was totally done by the women in the region. The trend of open defecation was the practice of the communities in the area but now due to the standing water in the field yards up to 3 to 5 feet there’s no place for people to use for that purpose. Women are the most vulnerable in this critical situation. There are a large number of pregnant women and lactating mothers in the region and there’s no proper health facility existing in the affected areas.

Future Recommendations: The affected communities are living in miserable condition so there’s a critical need of launching humanitarian assistance programs in WASH, Health, Food and Nutrition, Shelter and projects to address women specific needs. The most important intervention is Disposal of dead livestock as it’s still on road sides which can cause a secondary hazard in shape of disease outbreak in livestock as well as humans. Provision of Shelter kits especially designed for hot weather and including mosquito nets is also important. The Response is still very slow so there’s a need to speed up the process to save lives and restore the livelihoods of the affected communities in Sindh.
