Thardeep Rural Development Programme (TRDP) is an integrated rural support program that has 22 years experience in emergency relief and rehabilitation.  A specialist in disaster preparedness and management, TRDP has provided relief and rehabilitation in Dadu during floods in 2003, 2005 and most recently, in 2007.

THE HUMANITARIAN CRISIS

  • The worst flood in recorded memory has wreaked destruction in a quarter of Pakistan, leaving an estimated 14 million homeless.
  • In Dadu and Jamshoro alone, around 300,000 people from 450 villages have been devastated, with still more flooding expected.
  • An estimated 65% of the 2 million flood victims of Sindh are IDPs and either in government relief camps (30%) or out in the open (35%).
  • Over a 100,000 IDPs are entering Jamshoro district daily; many camping on open ground or going to Hyderabad and Karachi.
  • Although those in government camps receive some basic relief including food, water and medical care, those camped out in the open are dependent on charity.
  • Conditions are extremely unsanitary and unhygienic without adequate washing and toilet facilities; posing a very high risk for disease.
  • Many children already show obvious signs of malnutrition and illness.  Many women are pregnant or breastfeeding and appear anaemic.

These people have lost their homes, their belongings, their crops, their livestock - their whole lives. Most of them are now barely surviving in the most abject and unsanitary conditions.
